Romanticism- Art

Romanticism
Romanticism was an artistic movement that arose in the 18th century, which implemented strong emotion, imagination, freedom from classic art forms and was against social conventions. A lot of people think that Romanticism is named for a romantic act or love but the fact is that it stands for a sense of glorification. This style gives a feeling of freedom, survival, expectations, wonder and courage. An artist of Romanticism period tends to express his/her feelings by adding emotions on every face shown on the canvas and creates a certain atmosphere on landscapes. The artists of that period had good ability to send a clear message of emotion by the way the model is tilting the face and face expressions. Most of the paintings are trying to show a message that nature can cause deaths by natural disasters like drowning of a shipwreck from extreme waves. They used to portray other natural disasters to show that nature can destroy a person plans. Romanticism got influences from Neoclassicism

The name of the painting is Cloister cemetery in the snow and the artist is Casper David Friedrich. It was made in 1817-1819 and he used oil paintings on canvas. It was destroyed in 1945 and in the past the painting was located in national gallery, Berlin.
Casper David Friedrich was a Swedish artist which specialized in German romantic landscapes. He had a tough life facing allot of his family deaths and choose to transfer his tragedies in his paintings
This is a good example of emotional landscape. The scene is giving a sad and loneliness feeling to the audience because of the weather he chooses to do of a cold and stormy night and reminds us of death. The artist created feeling of fear of being alone in a place like this which looks dark and abundant. I think that the crosses are representing the death and burring. The people walking in black clothes are suspicious if they are ghosts or just people praying for the souls of their loved ones.  I admired the fact that the artist used black, white and shades of gray and managed to create all these emotions. There is a great attention to detail in fact the painting looks realistic. Casper David is expressing his faith by adding a huge amount of crosses. The white is giving some light and contrast to the painting because it is combined with an opposite color which is black.

This is another painting named the liberty leading the people from romanticism period which is made in 1830 and created by Eugene Delacroix with oil on canvas. At the moment it is situated in Paris.
The artists made this painting chiaroscuro but focusing on the women with her background light which is emphasizing the importance and looks like she is a champion of something and in my opinion she looks like she wined a battle or war.  It is symbolizing the war because of people death and some happy because of freedom. I can observe the differences of clothing styles which gives first impression of who is rich and poor. She has a slight of eroticism factor because of the exposure of the women carrying the flag. The artist created a feeling of liberty and conquering with the face expressions and some poses especially the woman and the once wearing rich with the hat and waist coat.
Comparing to the other painting here the artist used more vibrant colours and used the people to send a message to the audience and focused on a person by adding the light around the women. I believe that it is more complicated to be painted that Cloister ceremony in snow because its details. Cloister ceremony in snow tends to send a sad and loneliness feeling while this painting gives a feeling of hope and liberty which is a happier feeling.

The Group Coldplay used liberty leading the people painting in their cover album which was released on 5th May 2008.  This is a perfect picture that shows that paintings of earlier years are being used today.  The designer decided to add cartoon effect in copy of the painting and add some dripping and splashes around the typography "viva la Vida". He used splashes to complete with the war theme in fact some dripping are located over the boys gun and it is like coming out of the gun. The colour of the typography is white and in the middle of the page to be clearly shown. There is a bit of change in colours . It is edited and looks more contrasting.
My opinion: Although it is something nice to see paintings from that time in a cover photo I think it is not original enough.  I would change something in the painting itself for example the way the women is cheering to be more original and interesting to look at.
